The latest wonderful addition to an otherwise large family of Dulaney sculptures.

Concrete Works

Burgess did try using concrete mix to make some pieces. His signature choice was, of course, the native Mississippi mud which he dug from pits behind his house. Someone had suggested that he make the pieces of something more permanent, so he tried concrete for a brief time. He told me he never liked working with it because it "tore my hands slam up...that stuff tuk the hide right offen my hands...boy it's some rough stuff"...he didn't wear any gloves or protection and the harshness of the concrete never suited him...he would dabble occasionally with it, but always returned to what he knew best, the soft cool mud.

These two photos were taken in the mid to late 1980's and feature a large concrete figure which is now in a private collection.

Great Standing Figure

This standing figure shows such magnificent imagination. Although it looks like a pretty standard Dulaney character from one side, when turned around it reveals a totally suprising upside-down face - super wonderful.

Surreal Two-faced Head

If this piece was on a high shelf, you'd never know that another face existed when viewed from the top. The front view of this head has a bit of a sinister feel to it, whereas the top face seems somewhat whimsical and easy going. The side view shows how each can be seen at once. Just another testiment to the powerfully creative mind of Dulaney.

Detail of Figure

The bust featured here has an amazing amount of detail work on the hair. Burgess used a single straw from a broom and a dry paint brush pecked into the wet clay to carefully apply all these perforations.
